class exercise 6

Here are the class exercise i did about juxtaposition. Its a very interesting exercise which stimulates the brain and creativity.

week 6 - Juxtaposition 2

This post is related to the post before.

juxtaposing is to place 2 random things together. Then, your brain will start to figure out the difference and similarity of the 2 things.

Our brain will identify the more similar thing than the unfamiliar one. This when metaphor and simile happens.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Metaphor- 2 different things which are linked by some similarity.

Similes - like , look alike

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FOR EXAMPLE,

We place a circle and a box next to each other. What will we think ?

We will think they are linked together or share same similarity. Our brain will think that both are shapes .

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, juxtaposition is a thinking we use in our daily life. Most of us don't notice it because we are used to it. Juxtaposition is good for the brain as they makes the brain thinks , differentiate and identify.

week 5- Juxtaposition

What is Juxtaposition. Simple saying is, it is the taking two things and putting them together. By doing this, it has the potential to draw attention based on each of their qualities. This is also done to compare, show similarities or differences between them. For example, i am driving, but i am not taking my driving license.

Juxtaposition is often used in literature and films. In films, juxtaposition is use for developing storyline and characters . Besides that, there is also random juxtaposition. This is simple moving 2 random objects in parallel to create creativity.

Simple saying. we need 2 things in order for juxtaposition to be done.

WEEK 4 - Associated Mind Map

Associated mind map is to create random words and to link words that have no connection
.
This way, it makes the mind map connected and attractive. With the visual it, it attracts our eye to see the image first then slowly read the content in it.

Well, i bet alot of people will get bored when they only see a normal black and white mind map like the one below.

Ways to do a mind map ( source - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_map)

  1. Start in the center with an image of the topic, using at least 3 colors.
  2. Use images, symbols, codes, and dimensions throughout your Mind Map.
  3. Select key words and print using upper or lower case letters.
  4. Each word/image is best alone and sitting on its own line.
  5. The lines should be connected, starting from the central image. The central lines are thicker, organic and flowing, becoming thinner as they radiate out from the centre.
  6. Make the lines the same length as the word/image they support.
  7. Use multiple colors throughout the Mind Map, for visual stimulation and also to encode or group.
  8. Develop your own personal style of Mind Mapping.
  9. Use emphasis and show associations in your Mind Map.
  10. Keep the Mind Map clear by using radial hierarchy, numerical order or outlines to embrace your branches.
Mind map can be use for :

  • problem solving
  • outline/framework design
  • anonymous collaboration
  • marriage of words and visuals
  • individual expression of creativity
  • condensing material into a concise and memorable format
  • team building or synergy creating activity
  • enhancing work morale
This is why i think mind maps will be very useful during brainstorming and it can be apply to divergence and convergence thinking to help find solutions or create ideas.

week 3 -Digital mind map of myself

This is a simple digital mind map of myself. Its very simple and straight forward so it's easy to understand.

WEEK 3 -Method of Creative Thinking and stereotype

METHOD OF CREATIVE THINKING

Creativity is a divergent thinking process followed by convergent thinking. No body is good at both. Its either good at divergent or convergent.

Divergent thinking

a process where we generate ideas and explore the possible solutions. It is like taking one thing an turn it into many things.

For example, when we get an idea, we( the divergent thinker) will think about many possibilities and solutions. We then will gather ideas and solutions to solve the idea. Many people used as a method of brainstorming as it really get things solved.

Convergent thinking

a process where all possibilities and ideas becomes a solution. It is like taking everything we got and turn it into something great. We can see that convergent thinking is the opposite of divergent thinking.

-------------STEREOTYPE-----------------

Stereotype is a very common thing in humans. It is a believe towards a group of people wether its negative or positive. Stereotype is cause by the media. By simply watching the media, we believe and judge someone according what we learn or see from media. There are good and bad stereotypes. But most of them are negative and insulting.

This is why stereotype can easily influence and change a personal's perception or view against or towards someone. For example, what does people first say if they saw a girl that dye her hair red ? I think the first thing that come in their mind is, she's a spoiled girl or she's a gangster.

I must say that we shouldn't stereotype on others, unless we really know that person. I think this is how humans judge someone's personal or look, with stereotype.

SO, DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER.

WEEK 2 - Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention.

Everyone have ideas. But, when new ideas, solutions and inventions are created, its called creative. We can see that creative people will leave a big impact on society. Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention are 5 different things. But, when we combined them together. It produces "magic" and sparks the world.

It all started with Johannes Guttenberg, he apply creativity, innovention and invention to create the printing press. This changes the world. He became the inspiration for others that anything is possilbe. Later on, we can see many creative stuffs like the telephone, planes and many more created. This is because the inventors applied Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention.

To be creative, people need to to view things in different ways or perspective as creative people always says; "think out of the box".

Novelty involves new, fresh and interesting quality. It is basically applying creativity in old things and change it. For example, trend. Anything that goes with the trend is new and fresh. When it combines with creativity, it will sell. For example, one of the trend now is the internet. Anything that is related to internet will sell.

Innovation
is bringing new ideas so that changes can be made for improvements. Without new changes, we won't advance. With the help of technology, innovation is possible. New ideas are applied together with innovation in order to create a useful product.

So, Novelty+ Creativity+ Innovation + Invention = The success to customer's needs.

Week 1 - Website for design inspiration

I found a very nice and inspiring website named Abduzeedo. It provides daily inspiration, tutorials and many more stuffs about design and creativity.

here's the link = abduzeedo

WEEK 1 - Creativity

This is the image of my friend Siow Lip Wen in a creative way.
The red defines the evilness in him. While, his smile and expression shows that he have a very nice smile.

Creativity
comes from the hardwork and passion of a person.

People like Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison are creative because of the hardwork and passion they put in their works.

Creativity is related to lateral thinking, ideas and mind mapping. Edward de Bono explained and wrote books that are related to creativity like the "Six Thinking Hats" and "Lateral Thinking: Creativity Step by Step".

Rollo May(The Courage to Create) says that ,“Creativity is the process of bringing something new into being...creativity requires passion and commitment. Out of the creative act is born symbols and myths. It brings to our awareness what was previously hidden and points to new life. The experience is one of heightened consciousness–ecstasy.”

I think, creativity had created many stuffs. There are many creative person and stuffs out there. If i would to list them down, it would be lots of them. One good example is the electronic gadgets that has touch screen function. Creativity is what sells now. Looks at the famous apple products like iphone and ipod. I think the creator of it is creative in the sense of advertising and designing his products. This is why, creative products sells.

Ovreall, i think creativity is the power to solves problems and it enable us to create new stuffs for the market.

WEEK 0 - Introduction to Creative Studies

I was very new and blur when i first attended the first class of "creative studies" . I thought creative studies is something like "media culture" which i learned during my last semester in foundation. I expected this class to be fun and interesting.

"Creative studies" teaches and inspire me to think and be creative. By attending this class, i started to understand what is creativity ,how to be creative and problem solving methods.

I also learned that design is very influential. I creates a big impact on society and culture. Without creativity, many things would had not been invented. For example, the light bulb, telephone , radio and many more.

Finally, creativity = hard work + passion
